Science at Learning Keys
Here at Learning Keys, we believe a Science education ensures a better understanding of the world. It helps us make scientific links between phenomena and experiences. It ignites a child’s curiosity and guides them in methods of enquiry and investigation. Children learn to ask scientific questions and begin to appreciate the way Science will affect their future in all aspects of their life.
Our goals
- Nurture curiosity about how and why things work.
- Develop scientific knowledge.
- Ask questions and develop skills to answer questions.
- Form conclusions based on evidence.
How we teach Primary Science in KS1 & KS2
For each year group, our lessons will include slides, worksheets and range of scientific resources such as activity cards to help explain scientific concepts and challenge children to think scientifically. All lessons follow the National Curriculum Science objectives enabling us to track your child’s progression throughout the academic year.
Our lessons will begin each topic with an interesting stimulus (hook) to raise curiosity and raise questions about the topic, harvest children’s prior knowledge, topic explanation and assessment of knowledge at the end of the unit.
By the end of their time at primary school, all children should be able to encounter more abstract ideas and predict how the world operates.
They should also begin to recognise that scientific ideas change and develop over time.
They should select the most appropriate ways to answer science questions using different types of scientific enquiry.
How we teach Secondary Science in KS3
Our focus for teaching KS3 Science is to develop a deeper understanding of a range of scientific ideas in the subject disciplines of biology, chemistry, and physics.
Children will begin to see the connections between these subject areas and become aware of the big ideas underpinning scientific knowledge and understanding.
At Learning keys, children will be encouraged to relate scientific explanations to phenomena in the world around them and start to use modelling to develop and evaluate explanations.
Science Enrichment
To enhance our Science provision at Learning Keys, we take part in different activities namely the Crest Awards for science. CREST is the British Science Association’s scheme for STEM project work that inspires young people to think and behave like scientists and engineers.
